Consider this single example, and consider how the interaction of your searches, your computer, your internet provider, you cellphone, your use of WiFi, can impact other matters.
Joe uses his computer to do a regular (or even an incognito or private search engin) search to find “alcoholics anonymous meetings” in his area. His nephew got a DWI, lost his license, and Joe encourages him to go to meetings and drives him to the meetings.
At this stage Joe’s internet provider has recorded the details of Joe’s search in the provider’s profile of Joe.
That night, Joe drives his nephew to the meeting, and naturally both bring their cellphone. Innocently enough, and certainly NOT by knowing choice, both cellphones connect to the open WiFi. Now all of the other cellphones there at the meeting are also using that WiFi (common IP address). Consequently all can be linked to each other, as being physically together, at the same time and place as that web-posted AA meeting, See how easily technology destroyed being anonymous there.
Many participants, at these type meetings, are looking for emotional support, friends and contacts to share their stories with, because they are in the same lifeboat. Frequently, participants share email or contact information with their WiFi using cellphones. Are you getting a sense of potential unintended consequences for everyone on that WiFi.
The potential consequences can be seen as good, bad and legal. For example:
Good: The internet provider could send Joe (and his nephew’s sponsor) a reminder that he hasn’t been to a meeting in a few days.
Bad: Joe’s ISP can notify his auto insurance (or health insurance or employer) that Joe is an alcoholic. What do you think happens with his insurance premiums? What about all the OTHERS at the meeting whose phones used the WiFi, and the devices that shared contact information?
Legal: Let’s say Joe filled out his auto insurance application and checked “casual drinker” or ONE drink a day. Does this information on his application and the IP’s reported indicate Joe’s lying, which would nullify his coverage?
Conclusion: Be aware, be thoughtful, be careful, use privacy solutions. Read on.
